This is a Calphalon CONTEMPORARY, and the top diameter is actually 8 1/2". It will fit an 8 1/2" lid, but an 8" lid is too small. That being said, the pan is solidly built and smooth. An omelet slides right out of the pan, and the pan is easy to clean. This is my second pan, replacing one that had see daily use (and abuse) since 2015. SOME people say you can clean these in the dishwasher, but I don't recommend it. My first pan' interior turned a brown color after the first time I put it in the dishwasher, and it was never as non-sticky again. There’s no disputing the quality of Caphalon pans, but in this instance, I wonder if they are selling us flawed Caphalon products that can’t be delivered to stores, where people can inspect the item in person before buying. I bought an 8-inch Caphalon pan and on receipt, noticed damage to the rim and some foreign material stuck to the cooking surface of the pan. A fluke, I figured. I requested a replacement and it was sent immediately. When I opened it, I discovered this one, too, had damage to the rim. Since the cooking surface seemed to be okay (one little uneven spot in the finish), I decided to keep it but wanted to share my experience with other prospective buyers. The photo is of the one I’m keeping.Bought this Calphalon 8 inch nonstick omelet pan to replace an old heavily used one. In my single person household, I often use a smaller sized pan for fast meals. This new one has already been used for breakfast, lunch and dinner preps. It is sturdy, heats evenly and is so easy to clean. Hope it lasts as long as my other Calphalon cookware. This Calphalon 8 inch pan is a replacement for one that we have had for many years. When I opened the very well packed order I found a number of gouges in the rim; the most significant one appears in the top of the photo. There are a number of smaller ones on either side of the handle. I certainly did not expect this, so now what are my options?Bob LaClairGreat size for 2-3 eggs, etc. Do not use metal tools - will scratch. Very easy to clean. The box that this single omlet pan came in has a label (see picture), "DO NOT OPEN! SOLD AS A SET! DO NOT OPEN!" It was ordered as a single pan. I don't know the story behind the note. I opened the box anyway and found the upper rim of the pan had a few small dings. Apparently the rim of the pan banged against something to get dinged. It used to be that when a single pan was provided, Calphalon would insert it in cardboard to protect the rim, but not in this case. There was only a piece of bubble wrap that apparently did not prevent the rim from getting dinged. I was a little disappointed in Calphalon and I hope this isn't a change in the way they sell and package their products. It's everything that it's advertised. The anodized aluminum is thick and heavy. The nonstick seems durable. The only thing that is giving me trouble is my inexperience. I use this pan for omelettes and eggs. The shape of the sides are steeper than what I'm used to so flipping the eggs in the air without a mishap will take some practice. I don't know if that's worth only 4 stars that is how I rate MY experience with the pan. Otherwise, I love it!!!The first one arrived in a box with no packing. Handle had punched a hole in the box. The pan had deep dings on the in side edge that went about 21/2 inches to the right of the handle. They replaced that pan quickly. The new one also also came with no packing in the box and ask had a few gouge like dings on the edge but the cooking area was not effected . We kept it because we needed it. But would have return it too normality. The dings look like they could be damage from stacking. This is the best fry pan ever.
